Choosing A New Garage Door

Welcome to our garage door information page, your one-stop-shop for all of the options available when it comes to new garage doors! We value educating our customers, and it is our priority that you are able to start from the basics and walk through each and every option so that you end up with exactly what you are looking for in a garage door!

The two most important aspects to consider when choosing a new garage door are the aesthetics of the door and the quality of the door. We carry a wide range of options for style, color, and design, and when it comes to quality, we’ve got you covered!

Our Commitment To Quality

The leading garage door manufacturers that we partner with such as Hormann, Amarr, and Wayne Dalton are known for durability and longevity. The doors themselves are built with commercial grade steel along with all of the parts that hold the door together and operate the lifting mechanism. The parts, or what we call the “bones” of the garage door, are extremely important in guaranteeing that the door performs well for a long period of time. Our doors will come with commercial grade spring systems, rollers, hinges, cables, bearings, tubes, etc. We take pride in the impeccable quality of the doors we install and are proud to deliver that quality to our community as well. Please see our step-by-step guide below for guidance on the wide range of options for style, color, and design.

If you prefer to have a technician come out and perform an onsite estimate and go over all of the different options with you, please give us a call or schedule an appointment online today! You may also reach out to our helpful door representatives here with any immediate questions. We are happy to assist and look forward to helping you find the right door for you!

  • Garage doors come in a variety of sizes, and the proper dimensions are very important to know when getting an estimate on a new door. We will also need to know how many doors you will need. Sometimes you will have multiple doors with multiple sizes.

The most common size for a standard double car garage door is 16 feet wide and 7 feet tall. However, it is not uncommon for the garage door to be one to two feet wider or taller. Sometimes more! The case is the same with a standard one car garage door. While 8 feet wide and 7 feet tall is most common, the size can still vary. We are happy to come out to take proper measurements if you would like an onsite bid!

  • When it comes to garage door insulation, there are a few factors to consider. Are you looking to keep your garage temperature controlled? Are you looking to have a thicker/sturdier door than what a standard, non-insulated garage door has to offer? An insulated garage door can help to keep your garage cooler in the summer months, and warmer in the winter months. While this is important for comfort, it can also translate to hundreds of dollars in energy savings as well. An insulated garage door will have the most effect in temperature control if the garage itself is insulated as well. An insulated garage door will also be quite a bit more durable than a non-insulated door, as it has extra layers!

Three most common garage door construction types:

    • One-Layer, Non-Insulated:
Construction Type: One solid layer of steel with a hollow interior.

    • Two-Layer, Insulated:
Construction Type: 2 layers. The front of the door (view from outside) will be a solid layer of steel. The back of the door will be a thick insulation with a vinyl cover for protection. This option is less common than the 3-layer insulated door because the vinyl backing is not quite as durable as the steel backing and is more easily cosmetically damaged over time with knicks/scratches etc.

    • Three-Layer, Insulated, Steel Back:
Construction Type: 3 layers. This insulation type has a layer of steel on the front, a layer of insulation on the interior, and a layer of steel on the back covering the insulation. This premium door will have maximum insulation and durability. This option is our biggest seller when it comes to insulated doors!

Each insulation type comes in a wide variety of colors, styles, and panel designs to fit your needs!

  • Next up, let's determine the best material, style, and color for your garage door while meeting your needs for aesthetics and budget!

    Material of Door:

While most garage doors in years past were made of wood, the most common choice for homeowners today is to choose a door made of steel. Steel will be mostly maintenance free and will stand the test of time in terms of durability over the years. Steel is a fantastic material choice for the doors because it will not be as affected by the elements as wood.

There are some beautiful carriage house wood overlay doors on the market today, and we understand that wood has a particular look and feel. If you choose to go with a wood overlay garage door, please note that there will be required maintenance over the years such as sanding, staining, and sealing. If you prefer this option, it will require more work, but it can be done! These garage doors will also be a little more costly as they have an extra layer (a regular garage door with another layer of the wood on top.)

An alternative option to the wood overlay doors would be our line of faux wood garage doors. They are made of steel and, in our opinion, have some of the most beautiful finishes on the market today, giving them a beautiful real wood look! Please contact our friendly staff today and we will be happy to walk you through all the options of these beautiful garage doors!

    Style of Door:

    • Traditional Raised Panel
The traditional raised panel is the most commonly purchased design in America today. This timeless look is offered in either the classic short squares or the elongated rectangles. Traditional raised panel offers a sturdy, reliable structure to the garage door, along with classic beauty. This style comes in a variety of sizes, colors, and window options.

    • Stamped Carriage House
If you are looking for some added charm and dazzle for your home, the stamped carriage house is an excellent option! Designed initially to resemble the classic carriage house doors that would swing open to let the owner’s carriage in and out, this style adds quite a bit of aesthetic beauty and curb appeal. There are many options to choose from that will allow you to custom design the perfect garage door for your home! Options will include long panel vs short panel, window designs, decorative hardware choices, and colors ranging from the basics (white, almond, etc) to stunning faux wood colors such as cedar and mahogany. Contact our helpful door builder staff today to get started on the process of designing the perfect garage door for your home!

    • Designer Styles
Aside from the traditional raised panel and stamped carriage house garage doors, we have a wide variety of additional styles/materials/insulation types/designs such as recessed panel, full view glass, and fiberglass. Whatever it is that you are looking for in a garage door, we are confident that we will be able to help you find the perfect garage door that meets your needs!

Please feel free to reach out to us today and we will be happy to send over some literature for you to get started on this exciting process!

    Color of Door:

We have an array of colors to choose from! Some of the standard colors will be white, almond, sandstone, desert tan, chocolate brown, and black. Certain models will have options for the faux wood finishes and a variety of additional standard colors as well.

    Windows or Solid?

‘Tis the question! There are many reasons why one would go with windows as well as why they would choose to opt out of windows. Windows can add additional beauty to the door, let in sunlight, and allow one to see out of the garage.

There are, however, some negative aspects to consider as well when considering windows. If climate control is important to you, windows could slightly affect this. Windows will let light into the garage perhaps warming it up in the summer months, and unless the windows are insulated, it will be a place on the door that lets heat or cold in and out. Lastly, if you are able to look out through the windows, others are also able to look in, unless you choose an option such as obscured glass.

If you choose to go with windows, there are many options to choose from! You may choose to keep the windows as plain glass, or add decorative inserts that give it a beautiful design. We also have optional upgrades for obscured glass, insulated glass, and specialty designs as well.

Please feel free to reach out to us today to request literature on the specific manufacturer that we carry for your neighborhood. We are happy to send you electronic brochures to browse all the options and then work diligently with you answering any questions, sending a technician out for an on-site evaluation, and guiding you through the process. We look forward to hearing from you and starting this journey with you!

  • Are you unsure whether you need a new garage door opener or not? If your motor is in good working condition, no problem! When we install the new garage door, we can reconnect the existing garage door opener to the new door. If you are looking to upgrade your garage door opener either because it is not working properly, is close to the end of its life, or you are interested in some of the new features that your older garage door opener may not have (ability to program to your car, wireless technology, battery back up, etc) then we’ve got lots of options for you!

Our professional grade garage door openers will come with many stock security features such as remote lock out, advanced encrypted wireless technology, and a trolley release system.
